Versailles no Bara (Movie)

Synopsis

A strategic marriage unites Austria and France, with the Austrian Empress arranging for her daughter, Marie Antoinette, to wed the French crown prince. Upon her arrival at Versailles, Antoinette is surprised to meet Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, Captain of the Royal Guards, who is revealed to be a woman raised as a man to uphold her family's military tradition. Antoinette, feeling stifled by courtly life and seeking a friend, quickly bonds with Oscar. As Antoinette's immaturity leads to the misuse of her royal power, Oscar finds herself torn between her duty to the monarchy and the plight of the impoverished populace. This narrative explores the lives of two women constrained by societal expectations and familial duties, whose suppressed identities ultimately shape their roles in the unfolding French Revolution.
